About Social Ideas

Social Ideas (“Социални идеи”) is run by a small editorial team based in Sofia, Bulgaria. We write in Bulgarian about social entrepreneurship and social innovation in Bulgaria: the law on social enterprises and the public register, funding from national and EU programmes, legal forms, design thinking, and youth civic projects. Every page lists the public sources it is based on, and we do not publish names, photos or contact details of private individuals.

The English text on this page is a summary. Everything else on the site is in Bulgarian. Most browsers can translate a page automatically if you need it in another language.

What you will find here

• Social business today (“Идеите днес”): practical guides to the Bulgarian Law on Social and Solidarity Economy Enterprises, the register of social enterprises, reserved public contracts, legal forms, funding, measuring impact, and Erasmus+ and European Solidarity Corps grants for youth groups.
• Events (“Събития”): how student forums, design sprints and hackathons on social innovation were organised and what came out of them. One of the best documented is the annual student forum “We are the Ideas” (“Идеите – това сме ние”), first held in September 2012 at Sofia University, where close to 150 young Bulgarians from Bulgaria and abroad spent four days in thematic teams on technology, economics, culture, science, education, the environment and the urban environment, each team designing a civic project to carry out afterwards. In 2018 the format became a 24-hour student hackathon, Innovation Academy 2018, held with Innovation Starter at the National Palace of Culture in Sofia.
• Projects (“Проекти”): civic and social innovation projects, among them the practical course in social entrepreneurship taught since 2017 at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration of Sofia University, with the Rinker Center for Entrepreneurship and Training, and volunteer initiatives such as regular visits to homes for older people.
• Blog (“Блог”): stories of social businesses, courses, hackathons and civic campaigns in Bulgaria.

How we work and how to reach us

We check each fact against a public source and link to it at the end of the page. When something changes, for example a law is amended or a programme opens a new call, we update the page and show the date of the update. Corrections are made as soon as we confirm an error.
